1.
On a polluted stream in a dirty old taxi in a forgotten dream, in a burned out meadow in a one star hotel in some local flophouse I’ll be waiting for you I’ll be waiting there on the river of Jordan in the cool summer air In a rusted out boat in an abandoned factory in some words that you wrote in a hundred year storm in a bar down the street in a state of confusion
2.
Hold Me Down 04:24
You never saw the photograph I took when I was eight of the leopard and the old giraffe lying in the shade we’ve a thousand miles to go my dear we’ve a million lives to lead and while they always seem to disappear they were never ours to keep Hold me down, hold me down, hold me down hold me down don’t let me walk away Hold me down, hold me down, hold me down I’ll come around one day There’s a wooden bucket filled with milk there’s an iron on a sleeve on the bed a dress of Chinese silk your mothers I believe she grew up in the Orient a missionary girl to her a daughter heaven sent a son not of this world Hold her down, hold her down, hold her down hold her down don’t let her fly away Hold her down, hold her down, hold her down she’ll come around one day There’s a lightness in the breezes that westward blow where the iron bells do toll there’s a kindness in knowing that in the end you will collect my soul Canary grass and timothy a field of marigolds he built his own distillery from a coil of copper hose and he joined the British royal fleet in service of the queen and there his true love he did meet making movies on the screen Hold him down, hold him down, hold him down hold him down don’t let him float away Hold him down, hold him down, hold him down he’ll come around one day we’ll all come around one day
3.
Well your road may be weary and your pleasures be few you may have a long way to travel just to get through you may be lost in the darkness and you can’t find your way you may spend a whole year living a lifetime each day but it’s better to be late doing something than to do nothing at all You may be downhearted you may be forlorn ripped up in ten different pieces ragged and torn and you’re adrift in the ocean and you can’t find the shore caught up in all kinds of sickness can’t find the cure but it’s better to be late doing something than to do nothing at all I won’t be pushed to the ground I won’t be badgered around I’m gonna stand on the floor I won’t be silent no more cause it’s better to be late doing something than to do nothing at all Your road may be weary your heartache be true you may have a hard road to travel just to get through and you may seek some shelter among the eye of the storm you may wait til it’s all calm and quiet and you’re safe and warm but it’s better to be late doing something than to do nothing at all You got a lot to learn and there’s a lot to see there’s a lot to know there’s a lot to feel so many miles to be a long way to go
4.
Well if you were a sculptor working stone from the ground you’d see it’s more difficult to build it up than to just knock it down You keep an eye out for vultures say they’re in every town and you can see them circling the sky above with barely a sound and it makes you want to run away, run away run away, run away hide away, hide away hide away, hide away home If you were a bomb squad and I was your muse you’d see it’s much easier to let me blow than to make me defuse but if you’re in for the long ride whether it’s win or lose you’d see it’s impossible to make it through without at least one bruise and still you want to run away, run away run away, run away hide away, hide away hide away, hide away home You might say it’s outrageous you might say it’s unsound you might say there’s too many people on this ship we’re gonna scrape ground but your fear is contagious your fear is unbound and you can’t even dare to take a dip for fear that you’ll drown and it makes you want to run away, run away run away, run away hide away, hide away hide away, hide away home
5.
Champagne eyes, ruby lips star filled skies, swingin’ hips Well I search for the words inevitably the right line escapes me and I stready my nerves all I’m dying to say is you got it going on It’s not easily done every thing that I state is so complicated while I could turn and run all I’m dying to say is you got it going on and on… Well I stutter and strain inevitably the right line escapes me and I’m wracking my brain all I’m trying to say is you got it going on
6.
The world is gone, the world is gone and I am gone, and I am gone Walls come down and walls go up a nickel falls into the cup we put on our masquerade when all we want is to get paid but we can’t even be sure of that no more People come and people go with the mazel tov and the mistletoe they put on their masquerade with the cheap perfume and the promenade but they can’t even be sure of that no more
7.
Oh he put that bottle down and backed away slowly he walked around this town through Brownfields and holy roads of stone so much clearer standing lightly no longer falling faster down again Oh he turned his mind around crawled out from under weight that pound for pound held him asunder in every way You ask me how I know but it’s so plain to see when you were down so low this time come night fall I won’t be scared at all I won’t go down that road again Oh he dropped that hammer down on the telephone ringing he never turned around all the while singing through every day
8.
All I got is this cold steel pistol a flower vase made of pure lead crystal all I got is this cold steel pistol now All I want is a cool drink of water the warm embrace like a momma gives her daughter All I want is a cool drink of water now I’m a red hot iron a dog trapped in a corner now I’m a cracked foundation in the brick and the mortar now send me back to my home I’m a coal black tire I’ve been tossed on the fire now I’m a shape in a shadow I’ve been begged and a-borrowed now send me back to my home
9.
Kissing babies is all you know and it’s worrisome just how far you’ll go blind ambition and baseless trust you’re a lethal weapon and you’re dangerous but I won’t give out I won’t give in I won’t give up and let you win All this money spent on yourself it’s a tragedy and it’s pointless wealth this whole thing is misunderstood it’s American Idol it’s Hollywood I know damn well what is right and wrong don’t want to hear you sing your song I can hardly contain myself but I blame me and nobody else I’d like to know what runs through your mind late at night when you’re tucked up cozy your checkered past ain’t so far behind you can’t pretend to just rise above it all
10.
Without you now… I’m a steamboat in the night I’m a bird flying out of sight I’m a wheel that’s come to rest or a heart without the chest like a fire out on the plains or the road after it rains like the still without the storm or a shape without the form and while you live it up I’m in here giving up baby, I’m out on wire And since you’re gone… I’m a word without the song I’m a right without the wrong or an eye without the sight or a sky without the light like a sea without the shore just this thought and nothing more like a light about to change or my mind all rearranged and while you’re waking up I’m in here breaking up baby, I’m out on a wire you come floating down and lightly touch the ground and I wake slowly from a dream knowing things aren’t always as they seem and you’re gone… I can hardly stand up straight every night I stay out late I got one thing on my mind watch it play and then rewind like a still before the storm or a shape without the form like a wheel that’s come to rest or a heart without the chest and while you live it up I’m in here giving up baby, I’m out on a wire When you feel you can’t take no more can’t keep the wolves far from your door and every day’s an endless road a to be continued episode
11.
Love Me Still Would you swear to be loyal and clear my name when I’m down in the gutter and drowned in shame when it’s obvious I’ve done the whole world wrong would you be by my side, would you sing my song? Would you stand behind me when I’m sure to lose and show faith in the face of the grimmest news would you give me the words that I need to hear would you have my back, would you show no fear? Would you follow me down every dead end street and accept my excuses though they’re incomplete would you laugh off the things that I trivialize would you shake your head, would you be more wise? Will you be there when I’m gone and be sure my name lingers on if the road is steep and long will you climb that hill will you love me still? Would you sugarcoat what they criticize and hold me closely and dry my eyes would you let me down easy and break my fall would you give it to me gently, or not at all? Would you let me believe what I want to believe and say it’s delightful when it’s so ugly would you know when it’s time to just tell me lies would you say I’m just right, I’m the perfect size?
